Although the unemployment rate rose slightly in Texas in June 2012 compared with May 2012, the state still added nearly 13,000 nonfarm jobs during the month, state officials reported.
Texas economy added 12,900 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in June. Texas' seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.0 percent in June, from 6.9 percent in May, and down from 8.1 percent a year ago. Texas remains well below the national unemployment rate of 8.2 percent, according to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
The state has added 282,000 private sector jobs over the last year, the TWC reported.
The Texas construction industry added 9,600 jobs in June. The industry has posted annual gains for six consecutive months and has added 24,400 jobs over the year for a 4.4 percent annual growth rate.
The "other services" industry, which includes employment in equipment and machinery repair, personal care services, and social and civic organizations, gained 4,900 positions in June, TWC reported. The sector has seen a 4.9 percent annual growth rate over the past year.
Education and health services sector showed positive employment gains by 3,400 jobs in June. This industry has experienced an increase of 46,800 jobs over the last year for an annual growth rate of 3.3 percent.
Employers in the financial activities industry expanded their payrolls by 2,900 jobs in June. Financial activities jobs have grown by 16,700 over the past year.
The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) had the lowest June unemployment rate in the state at 4.3 percent. The Odessa MSA came in second at 4.9 percent, and the Amarillo MSA third at 5.5 percent (not seasonally adjusted).
