Ecclesiastical reports sharp fall in church metal theft

Church insurer Ecclesiastical has reported that the number of insurance claims for the theft of metals such as lead from church roofs has fallen sharply.

The steep decline follows Ecclesiastical’s Hands Off Our Church Roofs campaign to have roofs fitted with alarms.

Between January and the end of July the insurer received 650 claims, less than half the 1,600 it received during the same period in 2011.

The theft reduction also appears to have occurred across the entire country, following the installation of alarms in 20 dioceses and many churches now letting thieves know of the enhanced security with signs.

John Coates, Ecclesiastical’s director of church insurance, said that the new figures were a welcome trend and that the insurer’s campaign had had a helpful impact.

The fall in metal theft is a welcome turn around after the insurer reported at the start of 2012 that it had reached an all time high, with claims for 2011 of 2,500.
