ABI issues flood advice

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued advice to people who have been affected by the recent flooding.

Those who have suffered damage to property or contents should contact their home insurer as soon as possible, most of which have 24 hour hotlines.

Policyholders should also effect temporary repairs, if necessary to present the situation worsening, and keep any receipts as these will be needed for the claims process.

Damaged items should generally not be discarded as repair/restoration may be possible (naturally excepting items that have become hazardous to health).

Should the weather forecast be for bad weather homeowners should secure anything that could cause damage (garden ladders, for example) and ensure that contact details for insurer, local authority and utility companies are safe in a waterproof location.

The Environment Agency website should also be checked to find out the local flood risk and sign up for their free flood warning service.

Aidan Kerr, Head of Property at the Association of British Insurers, emphasised that insurers understand the traumatic and disruptive nature of flooding and want to help customers recover as quickly as possible.
