ABI welcomes Government moves on whiplash fraud

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that the Government is on the right track to respond to rising whiplash claims.

ABI Head of Motor and Liability James Dalton responded to the publication of a Government consultation to tackle rising whiplash claims by saying the organisation was pleased the Government recognised the need for tough action on the matter.

Dalton went on to say that whiplash had been seen as the ‘fraud of choice’ for too long and that, despite road safety continually improving, 1,500 whiplash claims were made each day.

He added that the number of fraudulent whiplash claims added £90 a year to the average motor insurance premium.

Dalton stated that better diagnosis would both detect more fraud and ensure faster payouts for genuine claimants, as well as helping to reduce the cost of whiplash fraud for honest motorists.
